Thanks for mentioning Fasterfox. A web accelerator can be pretty useful. Fasterfox only works with older versions of firefox (until version 2.0?), however there are other programs and add-ons. BTW, Firefox 3.5 or Chrome use many of these optimizations for acceleration. They are much faster than older versions.

One of yahoo's rules of high performance is to use as little domains as possible in order to reduce HTTP requests. However, browsers can download a limited number of files at the same time from one domain (AFAIK about 4, probably there are differences between browsers) and it is possible that there can be speed improvement if you use different domains. Do you have more information about download parallelism?

That said, google maps is fast for several reasons. I did an analysis with YSlow and Firebug of google maps. You might want to have a look at google maps site loading performance (note that YSlow doesn't know which sites are CDN).
IMHO, the most important reason google maps is fast is that files are served from low latency servers all over the world. If you use the google app engine as CDN, as I recommend in the article, you'll get similar latency.

If you are already using a low latency CDN, before distributing files over different servers, I would suggest reducing the number of external files. Combine javascripts into one file and CSS into one. My suggestion is to host your media files (including images/css/js) on another sub-domain instead of putting in main domain. It helps to improve the download parallelism. and will improve your website loading speed for sure.

google maps is taking benefit of this technique only. so I think this should be our first and major step in order to improve speed.
