Social Networking Websites by Usefulness

Social news sites can greatly push traffic for your blog. However, it takes an effort and an investment of time to submit articles to different sites. Therefore it is necessary to prioritize. In this post I present a list of social websites with alexa rank and page rank for each site and the information whether the site is do-follow or not.

In a previous article I showed how to setup a social bookmarking toolbar and showed a list of most-popular social networking websites based on submissions from blogs. However missing was the potential usefulness of submission.

Usefulness of submission relates to whether it can bring you traffic or pagerank. The first factor depends on traffic of the social news site, the second on whether the site is do-follow and its pagerank. While looking more into social networking, I found exactly these data on socialposter.com, a semi-automated social bookmarking mass submission system.

This table for 78 popular social bookmarking sites their alexa rank, pagerank, and whether they are do-follow (Y) or not (N). I ordered the table by alexa rank.

thank you for providing this information, complite with no/dofollow status.
for SEO, is also required to submit to the nofollow Social Netwotk? Whether not enough just to dofollow?

thanks for sharing

Wow.. that's a really useful list.
I have some questions here:
- How to know if a site is follow or do-follow one?
- Will google bot/spider track no-follow links?
Since my search status bar highlights all the links on Digg, then it should be no-follow (contrary to your list), right?
Please enlighten me
Thanks!

@Online Dating Tips: I just checked digg and found it was do-follow.

How to know if a site is do-follow?

There are several add-ons for firefox, which will hightlight non-follow links (for example NoDoFollow, I've never tried this one). Another possibility is (that's what I do) to look at the page source (control-u in firefox) and to find a link to a news source and check if a rel="nofollow" appears in the html link. If there's no "nofollow" it's dofollow.

For example on digg I found this link to a news called "Iran soccer chief apologizes [...]":

<a href="http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/meast/01/03/iran.soccer.israel/index.html?eref=igoogle_cnn" class="offsite ct-world_business" rel="dc:source d31EXJI" property="dc:title" target="_blank" onclick="gotoLink('18240976');">Iran soccer chief apologizes for Israel greeting</a>

I don't know what your search bar does, but this is dofollow.

The google bot should not track nofollow links. The Nofollow attribute was invented to prevent link spam. By idea at least links marked with nofollow should not be given any importance, so that it brings no (pagerank) value for spammers to put them on a website.

Nofollow links might appear in yahoo search if you search "link:YOURWEBSITE". I don't know if yahoo gives importance to them, however.

I use onlywire to submit...
With this information I will maximize the dofollow ones. Thanks

Wow! I never realized that facebook and some other sites were no follow links. That changes a lot on how I was planning to promote my online business I was going to start.

Also, socialposter.com is a very useful tool. I hadn't heard about it before and using it will definetly make it easier to submit to social networks.

Keep up the great posts!

PS Thanks! From EC

@samsung hdtv: If you don't get a permanent do-follow link from posting to a social news site, you can get traffic (which is the primary goal of seo) and some visitors may comment and link to your articles.

Traffic and do-follow permalinks are only part of the story. A lot of seo consists in building social connections (you may want to see my article about the importance of commenting on blogs), so it's important to choose the news sites which are related to your topic and build connections by finding the right people and letting the right people find you.

@Just Hunting Tips: Whether facebook or other no-follow sites can help you depends on the business you want to start. I imagine these sites could be great for product promotion.

Hello
Its a great post. You have given a nice list of social networking sites by its page rank, alexa rank and do follow or no follow. Its very interesting to know about these sites ranks. You have done a good job.Thanks..

I replace my SearchStatus with SEO Quake plug-in, and it gives me satisfying result
Yep.. that one confuses me since all no-follow links appears on my backlinks (checked by Yahoo)therefore I asked you before :)

Thanks for this cool info! it really helps bringing the traffic!

Thanks for this list & rankings. The tip you gave (in a comment reply) about commenting on news sites that are related to your topic is great advice. I'll start to do that more.

@Srinidhi @ Cricindia: I confirm, you can get a lot of traffic from social websites. I think my next post will be about the effects of slashdot and stumbleupon.

@Rachel: For some time my most popular article was about the installation of google chrome in linux the link to which I left at an ubuntu forum.

WOW, I didn't even know that there were these many social networking websites out there! I can't believe that Twitter is so low on the list, that's where I get most of my traffic. I could only imagine if I signed up for mywebs.yahoo.com how much traffic I would get

Just want to say thank you for your effort to collecting the list and share it for us :)

Thanks,

@Teen on da Rise: You write that Twitter is the best source of visitors for your blog. I see you put up a retweet widget. I think this is very useful and that's why I also have it here. You might get even more visitors from other sites. Please note, however, that this post looks at the usefulness of social networking sites just from visitor statistics and SEO value. To know which social networking site can be most useful to your website depends on the overlap of target audiences of your website/blog and the social networking websites. To know more about target audiences of individual websites you can look at its alexa statistics, e.g. alexa stats on reddit.

@Online Dating Tips: I am happy it works now.

I want to recommend another social site which is not listed here: shetoldme. It's a do-follow site, PR5, alexa rank 20,938. I have gotten many visitors from shetoldme and earned even more money from adsense revenue sharing than on this blog. If you want to sign up please use my referral link, which means I will get some of adsense revenue otherwise given to shetoldme: shetoldme.

That is a huge list. Too bad Social Networking wasn't simpler. I mean, do we really need this many? :) Thanks for posting.

@self defense Rob: The list isn't even nearly complete. There are many more. This list could help you choose the ones which are most useful to you, for search engine optimization and attracting traffic. Another aspect, not covered here but which you should look at, is the niche of the social bookmarking site.

There are programs for mass-submission that help you submit to many social networks at once, such as socialposter.com and onlywire (see my post on onlywire article submission).

Don’t discuss about anything that may amount to reasonable
conflicts or arguments. The topic should not relate to politics or something
that brings up conflict. If, something is to be discussed it should be
discussed in healthy manner as here you are not sitting for GD or interview so
try not to show your argumentative skills.
